Summer Newsletter

It was supposedly King George II who said that “the British summer is three fine days and a thunderstorm”.

Clearly George was around before that other fine summer institution, the Continuum Summer Newsletter.

A great way of keeping up to date with tax changes, it’s sure to make the list of top summer reading (well, perhaps ‘sure’ is a little optimistic).

The Newsletter can be downloaded by clicking on the link below. Do take the time to download and have a browse.

  • Tax compliance considerations if you are thinking of selling a buy-to-let property.

  • And much more!

We hope you find it interesting and if any of the items raise questions, do please get in touch.

Peter Shilton v The Taxman

(Long suffering) Southampton football supporters will know that at one time England goalkeeper Peter Shilton played for the club in the 1980s. Perhaps less well known is that Shilton was involved in a tax case - not that he had done anything underhand but over whether a payment made to him by the club he moved from (Nottingham Forest) to encourage him to make the move was taxable in full as ‘employment income’ or was a redundancy payment. The case dragged on for nearly a decade before the House of Lords decided that the payment was more connected with Shilton joining Southampton than it was with him leaving Nottingham Forest. Even though paid by Nottingham Forest, it ‘arose’ from Shilton’s employment with Southampton and so was taxable in full.

Incidentally, in a career spanning 22 years, involving 11 clubs and 1, professional games, Shilton only ever scored one goal. In 1967 playing for Leicester City when a long clearing punt somehow found the net - against Southampton.
